I Resigned As A UTH Mortuary Attendant, Terrifying Nightmares Haunted Me
I really liked my job as a mortuary attendant personal by the University Teaching Hospital (UTH ) mortuary. It was truly the best occupation I was longing for since I was a small kid. never saw this as just the same filed as theirs. Some mocked me by saying I was truly a walking dead, little did they know the ambition I had in being a mortuary attendant. I graduated after four years of studying at campus then I got a job in the University Teaching Hospital mortuary as a morgue attendant.
My first experience was not that friendly as it was my first time to see so much bodies lying in fridges and not just bodies but dead bodies. There were bodies of handsome men with all sizes.
Curvy women who were dead were even more. At times I wondered what made a woman or a man to boast around when they were alive and when they die they were just but useless.
The city mortuary was specifically meant for people who had fatal accidents in the city so one can picture how the morgue looked like. At times a body was brought without a head, sometimes
a body with all body parts broken and it was the duty of the mortuary attendant to wash, dress and preserve the body for it not to get spoiled for money was really paid in our accounts monthly hence we had no excuses of not doing our job. I did the job for 6 years.
My grandmother had once died in a road accident and surprisingly brought by the mortuary for body preparing for burial so coincidental I was the one to undertake that. I wanted no one to
know it was my grandmother at any given time. But this was the only thing which made me resign from the job. Some fellow mortuary attendant would eat by the rooms. Others would even
wear neither masks nor gloves while eating. When I asked them if it was odd to behave in that manner they said that everyone would die hence it was not a big deal to behave that way. Few months after I resigned, I was not able to sleep in peace at my place. Each moment my wife
turned the lights off, I would see caskets and dead people, some which I attended at the mortuary laughing and talking. I was even choked in my sleep hence breathing became a problem. Life
became more difficult for I had even shared with friends who in turn said I was an alcohol addict and those were only hallucinations. The nightmares became more and more as days went. The
only solution to tame them was by staying wake all the night, which was a difficult task to do since the body needed rest.
Luckily I got a new job. But what really disturbed me were the nightmares which even affected me psychologically. I tried prayers and medication but all was in vein. Some people would tell me to take much alcohol and when I was drunk I would even talk with the dead people I met in the nightmares but this one was again in vein and of no help to me.
