Nigerians got all emotional about my comment on a blog when I said SA music industry is more valuable than Nigerian music industry. Just as they might be shocked that Black Coffee is richer than Burna Boy. Let’s not confuse bloggers’ opinions (bloggers often say Nigeria is the biggest) and packaging with reality: with proper structure and monétisation, Nigeria has the market to beat SA hands down, but for now, the numbers are in favour of SA, even with Nigeria’s top artists on global charts.

Nigerian has the highest volumes and the highest population, hence the biggest in terms of production and potential market. But in terms of income, structure, value chain (everyone can eat, not only Artist, manager and producer) etc , South Africa is ahead for now. South African streaming market (the biggest indicator of music growth now) is maybe more than twice that of Nigeria, even growing 30% year on year last year, particularly with the emergence of Amapiano. Yes, Nigeria has the big names but South Africa has large volumes of artists with big numbers. And South Africa has been winning Grammy’s, not only in African but in international categories – Hugh Masekela, Ladysmith, SGC, Black Coffee, Nomcebo etc but they don’t package like Nigerians . So SA is international and was international before Nigeria. Not to talk of the house/electronic music industry, where South Africa is the the world leader. Finally, Nigerians are only big on urban and some traditional genres( juju), but SA is big with Urban, Rock, Contemporary, Jazz, Traditional, Electronic etc etc, proved by the number of festivals they have monthly in each genre. Nigeria has historically leaned on the SA industry trends such as house music and Amapiano in order to push their music further – it is not by error. They are smart to do that. Let’s not be sentimental . Nigeria can also learn from SA by improving its monétisation and structure (with that it can become 2 or 3 times bigger than SA), while SA can learn packaging from Nigeria .

This is not a post against Nigeria. It is an objective post about African development and how we can be stronger together
