HUMAN Rights Commission Director, Sindiso Sichone, has been suspended to facilitate an independent disciplinary process against her.

The decision to suspend Sichone was reached unanimously following a Commissioners’ Statutory Meeting convened on 8th November, 2023.

In a statement issued Monday, signed by the Board of Commissioners, the indication is that in the interest of confidentiality and common decorum, the details for the disciplinary action against Sichone will be concealed.

The Commissioners, however, note that various internal documents relating to the disciplinary process have been availed to some selected media institutions.

They have since refuted allegations that there was an external influence in their unanimous decision to institute independent disciplinary measures against the Director.

The Commissioners add that they are empowered by the Human Rights Commission Act, Chapter 48 of the Laws of Zambia, to provide oversight on the operations of the Commission.

They add that unless absolutely necessary and justifiable, the Commissioners will not comment any further on this matter as it is currently before the Attorney General, who is representing the Commission, and Sichone’s Legal Representatives.
