The Arabic Script on Naira notes has nothing to do with Islam. They only indicate the denomination of the Naira note in question – Reno Omokri Educates Ignorant Fans

Reno Omokri has addressed the issue of Arabic language on the Naira notes following a question that is asked by one of his fans. They ambiguous question what is Arabic language doing on our Naira note does it mean that Nigeria is about to be Islamized? Following the question Reno Omokri responded as below

“Dear @joxydgr8texx,

Thank you for your question. You should realise that Hausa, Yoruba and Igbo, and the other three hundred or so different languages spoken in Nigeria, are all spoken languages. None of them are written languages, although there does exist some limited form of writing among a few Nigerian tribes, including carving with the Edos and Nsibidi with the Ekoi people and borrowed by the Efik and Igbo ethnicities.

To solve this lack of a script, the indigenous Hausa people adapted Arabic into the Ajami script.

Now, both Arabic and Roman scripts are foreign to Nigeria. We must understand that Arabic does not mean Muslim, and Roman does not mean Christian. To, therefore, reject Ajami on our Naira notes (what is there is Ajami, not Arabic) and on any of our national emblems is actually silly. You might as well question the Roman script.

There are Arabian Christians who have used the Arabic script since before Islam even existed. Waraka ibn Nawfal, the man that the prophet Mohammed (SAW) went to after he had his initial revelations, was a Christian priest, and he taught and wrote Scripture in Arabic.

The Arabic Script on Naira notes has nothing to do with Islam. They only indicate the denomination of the Naira note in question. Even in Hausa, much of the words they use for numbers is of Arabic origin. For instance, when you hear the Hausas say, Naira hamsin (fifty Naira), the hamsin there is Arabic. In Swahili, fifty is hamsini-also Arabic.

So, why do we have Arabic scripts on our currency and the emblems of some of our national institutions? There is a straightforward reason for this, and it is not sinister.

There are people in Northern Nigeria who we in the South call illiterate but who are actually very learned in Ajami. They cannot read and write English, but they can read and write Arabic or Ajami. Some of them do not even reckon with the Gregorian Calendar. They are fully detached from English and other vestiges of colonialism. They have newspapers and books, including textbooks published in Ajami

The use of European alphabets in Nigeria is less than 200 years old. The use of Ajami is almost 500 years old. If any of these scripts is closer to our culture, it would be Ajami.

The point here is that we are asking for a pre-colonial script to be removed from our Naira in place of a colonial script. The irony of it!

Thanks again, and may God bless you.
