ZAMBIM MORALITY RATE ON HIGH AS OVER 20 000 ZAMBIANS CONTRACTED CHOLERA,  699 DIED – MASEBO

MINISTER of Health, Sylvia Masebo, has noted that since the Country recorded two Cholera cases from Kanyama in October, 2023, the cumulative number of cases across the country as at March 1, 2024, stands at 20,577.

Giving a Ministerial Statement in Parliament, Friday, Masebo stated that 699 deaths have been recorded under the period under review, with 60% of those happening out a health facility, while 19,746 discharges were made.

She added that admissions have reduced from the peak of 1,187 a day in the second week of January this year, to under 100 admissions a day.

Masebo said the steady downward trend has been observed even in the Cholera epi-centre of Lusaka where less than 50 new cases are been recorded daily over the last 2 weeks.

She added that the marked reduction of new cases has been reflected by the witnessed zero admissions to the main and largest admission center at Heroes Stadium in Lusaka.

Masebo further stated that government had engaged GAVI, the vaccine alliance and through the United Nations systems, with oral cholera vaccine doses received and people vaccinated.

She reported that 1,888,112 individuals have been vaccinated in various Cholera hotspot areas, with 3,952 healthcare workers and 3,634 people in correctional facilities also getting the vaccime.

Masebo reiterated that Cholera is not yet over, hence the need for implementation of continued measures to curb further spread.
